In 2019 the World Economic Forum published a report called the Future of Jobs which states that the « job families expecting the highest employment growth are Architecture and Engineering and Computer and Mathematical ». Yet these degrees often do not include courses on presentation and communication skills. Often the best ideas from some of the brightest minds can be lost just because they have not been packaged in the right way.
During my international corporate career, I was lucky to work in America on a multi-million dollar train project which was one of the few projects of its scale which I have seen being successfully run on time. As you may know, delays can cost the customer millions and can sometimes cost companies a relationship.
What I learned from assisting the Project Manager was that every voice must be heard, including the project planner and the engineers who were less confident in public speaking than the trained legal representative and upper management. This Project Manager ran his meetings in a way in which everyone participated and had equal power to influence the direction of the project. As a result, all ideas which were important were heard. Not to mention that it was done with a team spirit which kept this sustainable.
I also understand what it’s like to present in a foreign language because before I trained as an accent coach, I worked in engineering and in business in Asia, Europe, and America.
